Wines from Cantina Tramin
In the northern Alto Adige, at the foot of the Alps, lies the renowned wine cooperative Cantina Tramin. Founded in 1898 in the picturesque village of Termeno, Cantina Tramin has grown into a leading producer with 300 winegrowers and 270 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards, situated at elevations between 250 and 850 meters, benefit from the rich minerals in the soil and the cooling influence of the Ora, a cool wind blowing from Lake Garda every afternoon. In recent years, the cooperative has increasingly transitioned to organic cultivation, enhancing the quality and sustainability of the wines.
Sommelier Paul Op ten Berg had the opportunity to taste and review two exquisite white wines from the Selezioni series vintage 2022. Here are his findings:
Glarea Chardonnay 2022
The Glarea Chardonnay 2022 comes from vineyards at altitudes of 220 to 280 meters, with limestone and gravel soils. After manual harvesting and direct pressing, the wine is fermented in oak barrels and further aged in barriques and tonneaux. The wine has a pale yellow-green color, with aromas of citrus and stone fruit, complemented by tropical notes. The taste is juicy and light-footed with a balanced wood influence and mineral tones.
Stoan 2022
The Stoan 2022 is a blend of 65% Chardonnay, 65% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Pinot Bianco, and 5% Gewürztraminer, sourced from old vines at elevations of 400 to 600 meters. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented and aged separately in oak barrels. The wine has a golden-yellow color and offers aromas of apricots, peaches, and flowers, with a complex flavor full of fruit, minerality, and vibrant acids.
Cantina Tramin's wines are a vivid testament to the unique terroirs of Alto Adige. With their perfect balance of fruit, minerality, and wood influence, they offer an unforgettable tasting experience that reflects the rich tradition and innovation of this historic cooperative.
